About me
I am a self-taught painter, printmaker, and muralist from the former Soviet Union. I spent most of my childhood and young adulthood in Brooklyn, New York until I moved to Portland, Oregon in 2015. Before I became a professional artist, I lived many lives: studying behavioral neuroscience, experimenting on the sensory systems of fish, working with sea lions at an aquarium, as a counselor for a girl with autism, as a circus arts teacher, a science teacher, and an organic farmer. My journey now continues as a full-time artist in Portland, where I live with my husband, our toddler, and our two dogs.
My artistic practice is rooted in an earlier life as a researcher of animal behavior, a perspective that now informs my preoccupation with subjective experience: what it’s like to be a being, not just for myself, but for other species. I like to imagine the moments in time that punctuate the lives of various creatures, examine their relationship with their surroundings, and explore the multitudes that they contain. Through my art, I seek to bridge the human and the more-than-human world, and to interpret the silent languages of consciousness and presence that connect us all. Each piece is a meditation on the intricate boundary between self and other, inviting the viewer to consider the rich internal life of every mind they encounter. Moreover, my work is an ongoing investigation into the patterns, questions, and mysteries of my own life.
Commissions
I am currently available for commission, and am especially interested in murals in public spaces. I also love collaborating on creative projects, whether they are illustrations, book covers, personal commissions, or tattoo designs. If you have something specific in mind, or just want to say hi, chat, or ask a few questions, I would be happy to hear from you. Please email me at sashawilkart@gmail.com
